Chapter 40: This Hateful Hymn Shall Cease

Adjudicator Cross is a Peninsulan Legislature from the True Eastern district.

Personality

Cross is confrontational when it comes to Shrue, although he comes across and amicable to the Legislators generally. His politics seem to be dictated by those in positions of power. He makes it clear that he does not like Shrue's political views. At times, his dislike of Shrue is even vindictive. It is a front as an act of self-preservation, which eventually splinters as the events of the series unfold.

Background

According to Carson, Cross is "from the True Eastern district. One of our finest politicians, one of our most respected public voices." He is incredibly popular and seems to follow a more traditional form of politics than Shrue does. He has been attending CenSec meetings for longer than Shrue has also, showing familiarity with Carson. He enjoys the comfort and familiarity that his world provides him, even if it does not provide him safety.

Whilst being an Adjudicator, Cross approved a military contract for his brother-in-law to manufacture shell casings for the army. It cost ten million regular and two hundred sacrifices a year, although there was never any evidence that it was successful.

During the last election, Cross was ruthless against his opponent Mindy Brightwater. He is regretful of this, but at the time had to beat her.

Cross wrote off his wine cellar as a business expense, for hosting. It contained five hundred and eighty bottles of finest Linger vintage, over half of which was never opened.

Chapter 31: Its Gaze Shall Fall O'er Trembling Plains	Cross speaks to Sam Kincannon about the Dosser's Draft. Cross is introduced when Carson compliments his necktie. He openly voices his dislike of Shrue at their first CenSec meeting. He finds out about Val with the other Adjudicators, and congratulates Carson of their breakthrough. He questions if a Saint really needs humanity.
Chapter 39: This Rotten World Shall Wheeze Its Last	Cross makes it clear to Shrue that he doesn't like them at the Summit. He even proposes using them as a sacrifice to get rid of the growing anti-sacrificial sentiment in the Peninsula. He drinks Tranquili-Tea Seven and is almost killed by the Mirror-Angel. Shrue brings him back to theirs, and they fall asleep on their couch.
Chapter 40: This Hateful Hymn Shall Cease	Cross and Shrue head to a bar to drink. They discuss what they plan to do next. Cross tells Shrue about the fact that his neckties act as a camouflage.
Chapter 43: One Last Song Of Revelations	Cross waits in the car outside of GGR for Shrue. He sees Brother Philly and Sibling Dawn enter and sets of the fire alarm. He arrives to see Shrue dead and Hayward injured. He helps Carpenter carry Hayward out of GGR.
Chapter 44: Of Prophets' Dark Deceptions	Cross drives the group towards the edge of Glottage before they realise a quarantine has been announced. He trials an ambulace to Zephyr-In-Mourning and they hijack a plane to heal Hayward. The plane takes off and Cross tells the High Adjudicator he resigns. He switches positions with Carpenter, attempting to prevent the plane from getting shot down. It is shot down anyways, and they crash into the White Gull River.
Chapter 45: Of Love, And Gods' Defeat (Part One)	Cross died in the Britomart crash. Carpenter prays to the Cairn Maiden for him, putting him to rest.

Connections

• Press Secretary Carson seems to know of Cross. Cross is initially under the impression that they get along, he praises Carson and takes his side during CenSec meetings and Summits. Carson does not share the sentiment, bringing him to a Summit where he is almost killed due to the mistakes he makes while drunk.

• Shrue and Cross initially do not like each other. They have opposing politics and seem to also have opposing values. However, after the Summit they become drinking buddies. Shrue even wants to bring Cross with them when they leave Glottage and head to join the Children of the Woundtree with Hayward and Carpenter. The views that Shrue has are imparted onto him, and his echoes some of their ideas whilst on board the Britomart.
